MANAGEMENT TEAM

François Ferré, Ph.D. CEO and President

Dr. Ferré is a co-founder of Althea Technologies, Inc, a San Diego company that provides services and technologies to streamline drug development. He has over twenty years of experience in cancer research and HIV clinical development. Dr. Ferré has held management positions at Cytometrics and The Immune Response Corporation. Dr. Ferré is a leader in gene quantification and biomarker development with over fifteen years of experience in the field. He has published several authoritative reviews on the topic of gene quantification, co-edited a bestseller book on PCR with Dr. Kary Mullis and Dr. Richard Gibbs, and edited a book on the topic of gene quantification. Dr. Ferré received his Ph.D. in Molecular Oncology from the Pasteur Institute in Lille, France and did his post-doctoral training at the University of California-San Diego. Dr. Ferré was the winner of the 2005 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Life Sciences category.

Joe Monforte, Ph.D. Executive Vice President and CSO

Dr. Monforte has over 20 years experience with genomics research and development. Prior to joining AltheaDx, Dr. Monforte served as Chief Scientific Officer with Althea Technologies. He was also co-founder of GeneTrace Systems where he served as Chief Scientific Officer. He has held management roles at the DOE Joint Genome Institute and within the Toxicology department at SRI International. Dr. Monforte has a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry from the University of California-Berkeley.

Carin Sandvik Chief Financial Officer

Prior to joining AltheaDx in December 2009, Ms. Sandvik served as Chief Financial Officer for NovaRx Corporation, where she was responsible for all financial, administrative, and contractual matters. Before her time at NovaRX, she worked as an independent financial consultant serving life sciences companies in the San Diego area, either as the functioning Chief Financial Officer or performing special projects. Ms. Sandvik was also Vice President of Finance for Corautus Genetics for five years, and she also worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers for twelve years specializing in acquisitions and SEC reporting. Carin graduated from University of San Diego with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

 

Steven Daniel, Ph.D. Senior Director Sales and Business Development

Dr. Daniel has over 15 years in the genomics industry, first as a founding scientist of Synteni, Inc., a Stanford University spin-out company pioneering the first cDNA-based microarray technology, later acquired by Incyte Pharmaceuticals. Since then, he has held sales and business development roles in related companies, including Boulder, CO-based Dharmacon, Inc., and Santa Clara, CA-based Affymetrix. Dr. Daniel earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California-Davis and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively.

 

Holly Trotter Senior Director, Testing Services

Ms. Trotter manages operations for GLP testing laboratory services. She joined Althea Technologies in early 2001, and brings more than 20 years experience in regulated testing services environments. Early work in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) included managing the BSL Level 3 foreign animal disease testing laboratory at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health in Winnipeg. Ms. Trotter and her team notched a significant achievement in garnering the lab ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Upon arriving in the US, she joined the Virology team at the prestigious San Diego Zoo’s Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) as Laboratory Coordinator. Ms. Trotter holds a diploma in biological sciences from the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Saskatoon, Canada.

 

Byung-In Lee, Ph.D., M.B.A. Director, Assay Development

Dr. Lee brings 12+ years of PCR- and sequencing-based assay development experience to AltheaDx earned in prior positions with DOE Joint Genome Institute, Invitrogen and LifeTechnologies. Dr. Lee holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an M.B.A. from the University of California at Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business.

 

 

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Ann Kessler Ph.D

Dr. Kessler has 27 years of full-time pharmaceutical industry experience in the United States and Europe with Hoffmann – La Roche, where she served as Director of International Project Management and was responsible for global project development decisions. She also held previous positions as Director of the Division of Exploratory Research, the Departments of Pharmacology and Chemotherapy and the Department of Biochemical Nutrition. Her managerial responsibilities in Research and Development concerned the discovery and development of novel drugs for global registration and launch in a number of therapeutic areas, including nervous system disorders. She holds 16 patents concerning pharmacological approaches to diseases.

James Glavin, Director, Althea Technologies, Inc. Healthcare Industry Executive

Mr. Glavin has been active in the healthcare industry for more than forty years, and has been a member of the Board of Directors of Althea Technologies since December 1997. Mr. Glavin was Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Immune Response Corporation, where he also served as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining The Immune Response Corporation, Jim served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Smith Laboratories, Inc., a medical products company. Jim has also been a healthcare analyst on Wall Street, a venture capitalist and has helped turn-around several struggling companies. Jim served as a Director of Inhale Therapeutic Systems, Inc., AVANIR Pharmaceuticals and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Meridian Fund. In addition, Jim has assisted with founding several healthcare startup companies and has served in top management positions therein. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Holy Cross College and a MBA degree from Harvard Business School.

 

J. Matthew Mackowski, Director Chairman, Managing Director, Telegraph Hill Partners

Mr. Mackowski has served on Althea Technologies’ Board since 2006. He has been a healthcare-focused venture capital investor since 1980. He began his venture capital career with Citicorp Venture Capital, where he was VP and a member of the investment executive committee. Mr. Mackowski later joined Robertson, Stephens and Co. and was partner and Chairman of the Venture Capital Group. In 1991 he formed Mackowski and Shepler, an investment partnership focused on developing life science and medical technologycompanies and the predecessor to Telegraph Hill Partners (THP) where he serves as Chairman and Managing Director. He received a BA from Duke University and an MBA from The Wharton School.

 

Deval Lashkari Ph.D. Director, Partner, Telegraph Hill Partners

Dr. Lashkari joined Althea Technologies’ Board of Directors in 2006. He has been actively involved in developing and commercializing novel technologies in the life sciences area over the past 16 years. Dr. Lashkari gained corporate and business development experience through senior management positions in a number of biotechnology companies. In addition, he was a founding Research Director at Synteni, which was acquired by Incyte Genomics, where he was Director of Product Development and with Operon Technologies, which was acquired by Qiagen. He received a BA from the University of California-Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

 

Magda Marquet Ph.D. Founder and Co-Chair Althea Technologies

Dr. Marquet is a co-founder of Althea Technologies, Inc., a San Diego company that provides services and technologies to streamline drug development. Dr. Marquet has over twenty years of experience in the biotechnology industry in the United States and Europe. She was formerly Executive Director of Pharmaceutical Development at Vical Incorporated, where she patented several novel methods for the production of clinical grade DNA for use in gene therapy and DNA vaccines. Prior to joining Vical, Dr. Marquet held management positions at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Protein Polymer Technologies, Syntro Corporation and Transgene. Dr. Marquet is a member of the board of Directors of BIOCOM and UCSD Athena. Dr. Marquet holds a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Toulouse/INSA, France. Dr. Marquet has received numerous prizes throughout her career. She was the winner of the 2005 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year award in the Life Sciences category, the 2005 UCSD Athena Pinnacle award in Technology and the 2004 Women Who Mean Business award from the San Diego Business Journal.

SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD

Jorge Leon, Ph.D. Chairman of SAB, President, Leomics

AltheaDx’s advisory board is chaired by Dr. Jorge Leon Dr. Jorge Leon is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in molecular diagnostics. Dr. Leon holds a Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology from New York University, and completed his postdoctoral studies at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg and Columbia University in NYC. Dr. Leon’s subsequent academic research focused on developing monoclonal antibody-based tumor marker assays and radio-immuno imaging devices, which are currently in wide use.

Eric J. Topol, M.D. Director, Scripps Translational Science Institute

Eric J. Topol, M.D. is the Director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, a National Institutes of Health funded program of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Consortium. He is Professor of Translational Genomics at The Scripps Research Institute, the Chief Academic Officer of Scripps Health, and a Senior Consultant cardiologist practitioner at Scripps Clinic. In 2009, he became the Gary and Mary West Chair of Innovative Medicine and co-founded the West Wireless Health Institute. Prior to joining Scripps, Dr. Topol served on the faculty of Case Western as a professor in genetics, chaired the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic for 15 years and raised its status to rank #1 by US News and World Report for 11 consecutive years, and founded the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.

 

Alfred Lui, M.D. Medical Director, Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group

Dr. Lui graduated summa cum laude from Andrews University in Michigan. He attended Loma Linda University Medical School and completed his residency in Pathology at UCLA-Harbor General Hospital in 1976, following which he joined the staff of the Liver Unit at the University of Southern California. In 1979, he joined Dr. Richard Ellis as a co-founder of Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group. Dr. Lui is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and is active in the Collage of American Pathologists, where he is a member of the Council on Membership and Professional Development and on the Publications Committee. He is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Pathology Inc., a Medical Corporation, an independent laboratory performing outpatient anatomic pathology services. He is the immediate past president and is currently a member of the board of directors of the California Society of Pathologists. Dr. Lui has special interests in liver, prostate, and Gyn pathology.

 

Dan Mercola, M.D. Ph.D. Professor, University of California at Irvine

Dr. Mercola is head of the UCI SPECS consortium, an observational clinical trial which utilizes prostate tissues and clinical values, to derive gene signatures predictive of outcome at the time of diagnosis. He is currently a member of various the NIH committees, including Site Visit Review, Program Project Grant Application, and Ad Hoc Reviewer, in addition to being an Associate Member at the UCSD Cancer Center, AACR organizing committee, and various other editorial boards. In 2004, Dr. Mercola was honored as the “San Diego Padres Medical All-Star’ and has closely worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense. He has also been a professor within the Pathology department, and later at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center within UC-San Diego. Dr. Mercola did postdoctoral work at Oxford University after earning a B.S. degree from the University of Southampton, England and completed his residency at UC-San Diego, after receiving his Ph.D., M.S. and B.A. degrees from UCLA.

 

Gregory J. Tsongalis, Ph.D. HCLD, FACB Director, Dartmouth Medical School

Dr. Tsongalis is certified as a high complexity clinical laboratory director and is currently the Director of Molecular Pathology, Acting Director of Clinical Chemistry, and co-director of the Pharmacogenomics program at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He received his Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed his postdoctoral training in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His area of expertise is in clinical molecular diagnostic applications for genetic, hematologic, infectious, and neoplastic diseases. His research interests are in the pathogenesis of solid tumors, disease association of SNP genotyping and personalized medicine. He has authored/edited five textbooks in the field of molecular pathology, published more than 100 peer reviewed manuscripts, and has been an invited speaker at both national and international meetings. Dr. Tsongalis has been the recipient of numerous investigator/scientist awards. He has served on numerous committees of the AACC, AMP and ASIP. He is on the editorial board of Archiv Pathol Lab Med J Clin Virol, and Exper Molec Pathol, as well as, numerous corporate scientific advisory boards.

 

Joe Monforte, Ph.D. Executive Vice President and CSO, AltheaDx

Dr. Monforte has over 20 years experience with genomics research and development. Prior to joining AltheaDx, Dr. Monforte served as Chief Scientific Officer with Althea Technologies. MEDICAL DIRECTOR

Kelli Chase, M.D.

Dr. Chase graduated Magna Cum Laude from Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, with a BA in Biology/Chemistry (joint major). She received her medical degree from Creighton University Medical Center, Omaha, in 1997, where she went on to AP/CP residency for one year. She finished AP/CP residency and a surgical pathology fellowship at UC San Diego Medical Center, where she also served one year as Chief Resident. She received an MBA in Healthcare Management from Regis University, Denver. She is a College of American Pathologists Spokesperson, and serves as a CAP laboratory inspector and team leader. Her professional memberships include College of American Pathologists, San Diego County Pathology Society, and California Society of Pathologists. Dr. Chase is currently Medical Director at LabCorp, San Diego and AltheaDx, San Diego. She is board certified in Anatomic Pathology since 2002.
